In the year 1974, the social welfare departments of the government of India has reportedly launched a National Policy for Children. The scheme outlines the commitment of the country in providing ample of services to the children even before they are born and after their birth. With the help of the scheme, the government is going to take care of the social and mental development of the children. The country regards the children as an essential asset in shaping the future of the country.

After a year, the UNICEF aided the country to launch a new program called ICDS aka Integrated Child Development Services. ICDS came into being to improve health nutrition and to look after the development of children from their birth until they are six years old. The program is also responsible for monitoring the pregnant mother and educating them. ICDS over time also helped the adolescent women and girls between 15 years to 44 years of age.

There are over 1.3 million Anganwadi Kendras which are spread across the country. Based on the reports by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, around 400 to 800 people from rural as well as urban community visit at least one Anganwadi centre in the country.

Each Anganwadi centre is comprised of an Anganwadi worker who takes care of the women and educates the entire community. It is the agent that accumulates the health and nutrition data on both children and women. Over the years, with the help of the massive networks of centres, ICDS has found an incredible reach.

In the year 2017, ICDS provided preschool services to around 33 million children across the country. The population data suggests that there are approximately 127 million kids in the country who are five years old. ICDS provides regular food rations to 95 million young children as well as lactating and pregnant women across the country.
